Liberal 'success' starts with workers

Mr. Falk asked, "What is it about liberals that cause them to innately reject or hate success?" (Fence Post, Saturday)

On the contrary, liberals love success and are for the welfare of American business. They are also for a level playing field for both business and the American worker.

Liberals have been in the forefront of progressive legislation for the past hundred years.

Social Security, Unemployment Compensation, Medicare, Medicaid are just a few of the social programs sponsored and passed for working Americans along with rules controlling banking, manufacturing, and commerce.

If Mr. Falk will look at the fruits of an economy where controls have been watered down or repealed, he only has to look at the present administration, which has removed most of the restrictions on business.

As a result, we see products flooding our country contaminated with lead and other dangerous substances because foreign manufacturers are not held accountable.

Laws requiring their inspection are not enforced because departments enforcing those laws have not been adequately funded.

Recently, the retired CEO of American Airlines, a staunch advocate for removing regulations in the 1990s changed his view in wake of the havoc we see in air transportation.

He stresses stronger government regulation on the industry. Our commercial aircraft are now maintained in foreign countries where he says they can't be effectively inspected by the FAA.

Liberals believe what is good for the average American is good for business, and not the other way around.
