Carmel 15, St. Joseph 5
Carmel's patience at the plate was rewarded Wednesday.
The Corsairs' hitters showed good discipline in routing visiting St. Joseph 15-5 in East Suburban Catholic Conference action.
Carmel pounded out 13 hits in improving to 19-2 overall and 10-2 in the ESCC. St. Joseph dropped to 4-22, 2-12.
Brian Siedlecki finished 2-for-3 with 4 RBI and Joey Burg went 3-for-4 with a triple and 4 RBI to lead the Corsairs.
"We're starting to get patient at the plate and I think we really showed that today," Carmel coach Chuck Gandolfi said. "We waited for our pitches and we got some good hitting out of it."
Carmel's offense started off early with a run in the first inning and never let up. The Corsairs scored in every inning save one and served up five runs in both the fourth and sixth innings.
In the fourth, Siedlecki came up big with a bases-loaded 2-run double. Then RBIs from John Zeffery, Jordan Sivertsen and Bobby Lyne added to Carmel's dominance.
"We were just relaxed today," Siedlecki said. "A lot of guys were able to get some good hits off of their pitcher. He was in there a long time, so it wasn't surprising that we did so well."
Facing a 9-2 deficit, St. Joseph mounted a mini-comeback in the top of the fifth. After winning pitcher Jeff Moree (4-0) allowed 2 earned runs in 4 innings of work, junior Alex Salvi came in on relief.
With Salvi on the mound, the Chargers went to work. Joe Battaglia started the scoring with an RBI single and Joe Krasny followed with a sacrifice RBI of his own. The Chargers' final run came on an RBI by Roger Espinosa off relief pitcher Michael Bergstrom.
Three errors killed St. Joseph in the fourth inning, as Carmel extended its lead to 8-2.
According to St. Joseph coach Jay Meath, his team has been down this road before.
"We've had quality starts in our last six to seven games, but then we give up errors and it just kills us," Meath said. "We got a good start out of Enrique (Silva), but with all those errors, it didn't matter."
