Briefs: Police open house

The Hainesville Police Department hosts an open house Saturday, 2 to 5 p.m., at the village hall, 100 N. Hainesville Road. Residents are invited to meet police department personnel, who will answer questions and listen to suggestions. Each visitor also will receive a compact fluorescent bulb courtesy of Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley. Light refreshments will be served.

Hospital application:

Lake Forest Hospital has submitted its application to develop an ambulatory surgical treatment center (ASTC) and an outpatient cancer center at the site of its Grayslake Outpatient & Acute Care Center, at 1475 E. Belvidere Road. The proposal, which requires state approval, would also bring outpatient oncology and radiation services to the area for the first time, hospital officials said. The surgery center and cancer center project will cost $65 million and add four 500-square-foot operating suites. Pending approval, hospital officials expect the surgery center to open in late 2010.

CLC graduation:

The College of Lake County hosts its 39th commencement ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Physical Education Center, Building 7, on the Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St. The CLC class of 2008 consists of 1,449 graduates who will earn a total of 1,697 degrees and certificates. Mike Caplan, of Gurnee, will give the commencement address and receive the Outstanding Citizen Award. Caplan is a weather anchor on ABC 7 News weekdays.

Wellness for women

The Vernon Area Public Library District will host a free wellness event for women Sunday. From noon to 2 p.m., participants can receive makeup and hairstyle consultations, get a massage, receive a mini-health screening and participate in other activities. A raffle is scheduled, too. Registration is not required. The library is at 300 Olde Half Day Road, Lincolnshire.

Identity theft prevention:

A speaker from the Lake County Sheriff's Department Crime Prevention Division will be at AmericaUnited Bank, 485 Lake Street, Antioch, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. May 31 to talk to people about protecting themselves from identity theft.
