Reds use longball to sweep Indians
Adam Dunn homered for the fourth straight game, and Joey Votto finished off previously untouchable Cleveland starter Cliff Lee with the first pinch-hit homer of his career, leading host Cincinnati to a 6-4 victory and a three-game sweep.
"I haven't seen that in a long time," Reds manager Dusty Baker said.
Rare things happened all around. For starters, no one had treated Lee (6-1) so roughly all season.
The left-hander came into the game on an amazing run, having allowed only 4 earned runs and 1 homer all season for an ERA of 0.67.
Now it's up to 1.37.
"Both of the pitches to Dunn and Votto I wish I had back," Lee said. "Sometimes you don't get the results you want. Today was one of those games."
Cardinals 5, Rays 4: St. Louis honored Stan Musial in a pre-game ceremony, attaching his name to the street in front of Busch Stadium. Then the Cardinals made Stan the Man proud on the field.
"It sounds corny, but we talked about it," manager Tony La Russa said the Cards' come-from-behind victory over Tampa Bay. "We wanted to play a game that Stan would enjoy."
Skip Schumaker's RBI double with one out in the ninth inning over a drawn-in outfield capped the Cards' rally from 3 runs down.
Diamondbacks 4, Tigers 0: Randy Johnson (4-1) pitched 7 scoreless innings for his 288th career victory to lead host Arizona past Detroit. Chris Young had 3 RBI, including a 2-run double, as the Diamondbacks improved to a major-league-best 28-16.
Red Sox 11, Brewers 7: David Ortiz homered twice and drove in 4 runs, helping host Boston top Milwaukee to complete a sweep of their series despite a subpar outing by ace Josh Beckett. Kevin Youkilis added a 2-run homer, and Dustin Pedroia also went deep for Boston.
Astros 5, Rangers 4: Brandon Backe pitched into the seventh inning, and Miguel Tejada had 3 hits to lead visiting Houston past Texas.
Backe (3-5) retired the first nine batters of the game and didn't give up a run until allowing consecutive homers to Milton Bradley and David Murphy in the seventh.
Rockies 6, Twins 2: Jeff Francis won for the first time this season, and Todd Helton homered and drove in 3 runs, helping host Colorado top Minnesota in the rubber match of their three-game series. Francis (1-4) struck out seven in 6½ innings for his first regular-season win since Sept. 23 last year at San Diego.
Angels 10, Dodgers 2: Mike Napoli homered twice and drove in a career-high 5 runs to power the host Los Angeles Angels to victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Napoli hit a 3-run home run off Derek Lowe (2-4) in the second inning and added a solo shot against Scott Proctor in the sixth.
Braves 5, Athletics 2: Yunel Escobar had 3 hits, including a 2-run single that gave Atlanta the lead, and Omar Infante added a 2-run triple in the eighth as the host Braves beat Oakland.
Blue Jays 6, Phillies 5: Lyle Overbay's 3-run, pinch-hit homer and Shannon Stewart's 2-run double helped visiting Toronto edge Philadelphia in a game that was delayed twice by rain.
Royals 9, Marlins 3: Jose Guillen homered and drove in 4 runs to help Kansas City take the rubber game of its series against host Florida. Guillen has gone 19-for-38 since May 7 to raise his season average from .165 to .245.
Mariners 3, Padres 2: Jose Lopez jumped on the first pitch from San Diego reliever Heath Bell in the bottom of the eighth, lining a two-out, 2-run double into the right-field corner, and host Seattle rallied for the win.
Nationals 2, Orioles 1: Rookie John Lannan took a 3-hitter into the eighth inning, Cristian Guzman homered, and visiting Washington ended Baltimore's four-game winning streak.
