Warren Township High School notes
Student's skills compute: Vladimir Jourviev, a junior at Warren Township High School is taking his skill in computer programming to the National Leadership Skills Conference in June.
Jourviev, who is taking computer programming courses through the Lake County High Schools Technology Campus, said his parents influenced his interest in computer programs growing up because they enjoyed working on a computer they had. Jourviev added that he plans to obtain a master's degree in computer programming and maybe teach some day.
For now, he has his sights on the weeklong conference in Kansas City to showcase career and technical education students. More than 13,000 people are expected to participate in the event.
The Warren student qualified for the national conference through winning first-place in the Skills/USA State Competition. The task for competitors at the state level was to create a computer program to solve a data sorting problem.
Other Warren students in the technology campus program who placed in events available at the state competition are as follows: David Arnow, fourth in Job Skills Demonstration; Brenda Carvajal, second in Nail Care Model; Brittany Diehn, third in Basic Health Care Skills; Ericka Farfan, first in Health Occupation Professional Portfolio and fourth in Suitcase; Brittany L. Freeman, second in Restaurant Services; Samantha Joseph, fourth in Advertising Design; Emily Kersey, second in Advertising Design, fourth in Technical Spelling and sixth in Quiz Bowl; Alyssa Levandoski-Torres, fifth in Basic Health Care Skills; Lisette Moreno, sixth in Medical Assisting; Jessica Petropoulos, first in Nail Care Model; Morgan Richter, second in Nail Care and sixth in Quiz Bowl; Lisa Rosenberg, fifth in Quiz Bowl and sixth in Advertising Design; Amy Scarbalis, second in Medical Assisting and Suitcase, third in Job Skills Demonstration and Health Knowledge Bowl; Justin Stefanowski, third in Essay; Sara Tomianovich, sixth in Health Knowledge Bowl; and Ricardo Turman, fifth in Computer Programming and Quiz Bowl.
Concert for Life: Warren Township High School's Business Leaders of America chapter has raised about $37,217 thus far at its Concert for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society.
The event, held April 6, was the largest project this year for the group.
Students began planning in early December and worked on every aspect of the project from asking businesses for donations, creating fliers and providing food for intermission.
Along with the sale of $5 tickets, the FBLA chapter also organized 48 raffle and 55 silent auction prize packages.
Matt Wessel, a Warren graduate and former FBLA member, was the featured performer, providing inspirational music to those who attended the concert at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Gurnee.
Over the past eight years, the chapter has raised more than $160,000 for the American Cancer Society.
