Walks bother Buehrle more than slam
CLEVELAND -- The book on White Sox starter Mark Buehrle is, get him early or risk not getting him at all.
The Indians apparently did some reading Tuesday.
Buehrle sandwiched a two-out single around 2 walks before Cleveland right fielder Franklin Gutierrez hit a grand slam, lifting the Indians to an 8-2 victory at Progressive Field.
Buehrle was just as upset with the walks drawn by Victor Martinez and Ryan Garko as he was with Gutierrez's home run.
"I'm not going to survive falling behind guys,'' Buehrle said after his record dropped to 2-6. "I don't have the stuff to fall behind. I hate more than anything walking guys. I need to cut my walks down, big time.''
While Buehrle was off his game, so were the rest of the Sox.
"Overall, it was a real bad game for us,'' manager Ozzie Guillen said. "Everything went crazy. Nothing was good for us. We really did a lot of things wrong. To name it all, we'd be here for a half-hour.''
The Sox had a chance to get right back in the game in the third inning when leadoff man Brian Anderson reached second base on the first of 2 errors by Cleveland shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera.
Toby Hall's double scored Anderson, and a single by Orlando Cabrera scored Hall.
Pablo Ozuna followed with another single off Indians starter Aaron Laffey, but Carlos Quentin popped out and Jermaine Dye grounded into a double play.
The White Sox threatened again in the fifth inning, loading the bases with two outs. But first baseman Paul Konerko grounded out to end that rally.
The White Sox left nine on base and were 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
Konerko also made an error that led to an unearned run, and Alexei Ramirez was guilty of a baserunning gaffe in the sixth inning that resulted in a double play.
Back in action: Juan Uribe played his first game with Class AAA Charlotte on Tuesday, going 0-for-3.
Uribe is on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring. He is eligible to be activated Saturday.
Lineup shuffle: With left-hander Aaron Laffey on the mound for Cleveland on Tuesday, Jim Thome and A.J. Pierzynski were held out of the lineup.
"Thome and A.J., you have to pick one of the days, that's the reason we did it,'' manager Ozzie Guillen said. "Those guys started swinging the bats a little bit better, but I'd rather keep them healthy and fresh for the long haul.''
Joe Crede, mired in a 4-for-23 slump, also got the night off.
Manager Ozzie Guillen said outfielder DeWayne Wise is going to make his first start for the Sox today since coming up from Class AAA Charlotte on Friday.
Indians 8, White Sox 2
On the mound: Starter Mark Buehrle took the loss after pitching 5 innings and allowing 7 runs (6 earned) on 8 hits and 2 walks. He gave up Franklin Gutierrez's first career grand slam with two outs in the first inning.
At the plate: Toby Hall was 2-for-3 with a walk and 1 RBI. Over his last four games, the catcher is batting .600 (9-for-15).
On the bases: The Indians pulled off a triple steal in the sixth inning, with pinch runner David Dellucci scoring.
