Werth homers in first three at-bats

Jayson Werth could not remember ever being this productive in a game -- that's including Little League.

Werth homered in his first three at-bats and tied a Philadelphia Phillies record with 8 RBI in a 10-3 win over the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night.

"Anything can happen on any given day, I guess," Werth said. "This game is crazy. It's not like I was trying to do anything like that. It just happened. I don't know what else to say … it's just crazy."

Werth had a chance to tie the major-league record of 4 homers in a game in the seventh inning. But with most of the 36,600 fans still in the stands despite the lopsided score and brisk weather, standing and cheering, he fouled out to first base on a 3-2 pitch off Brian Tallet.

"Hitting a home run was probably on my mind," Werth said. "I was just looking for a good pitch to hit."

Braves 3, Athletics 2: Mark Kotsay knocked in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning with a two-out RBI double, and Atlanta edged Oakland for its eighth straight home victory. The loss was a season-high fourth in a row for the A's. The Braves have the best home record in the majors at 15-4. They also have the worst record away from Turner Field at 6-16.

Royals 7, Marlins 6: Brett Tomko pitched 6 innings for his first victory in nearly six weeks, and a pair of unearned runs helped visiting Kansas City extend its winning streak to five games with a win over slumping Florida.

The Royals' winning streak is their longest since last June. NL East-leading Florida has lost four in a row for the first time this year.

Orioles 5, Nationals 3: Luke Scott homered, Melvin Mora hit a tiebreaking double in the fifth inning, and Baltimore beat visiting Washington for its sixth win in seven games. Left-hander Garrett Olson (3-0) struggled but remained undefeated in 4 starts since being recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on April 29.

Reds 4, Indians 3: Adam Dunn homered and drew a tiebreaking walk with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, sending host Cincinnati past Cleveland for its season-high fourth straight win.

The Reds got homers from Brandon Phillips and Dunn, then won it with the only run in the game not produced by a homer.

Rays 3, Cardinals 1: Andy Sonnanstine carried a shutout into the eighth inning and added a pair of singles to a 12-hit outburst in streaking Tampa Bay's victory over host St. Louis.

Akinori Iwamura had 3 hits and an RBI for the AL East leaders, who are eight games above .500 for the first time in franchise history.

Rangers 16, Astros 8: Josh Hamilton went 5-for-5 with a pair of long homers and 5 RBI, and host Texas topped Houston in a wild Lone Star Series opener.

Ian Kinsler scored the go-ahead run on a close play that led to the ejection of Astros manager Cecil Cooper.

Twins 4, Rockies 2: Nick Blackburn pitched 7 strong innings, and Delmon Young doubled twice and scored 2 runs to lead visiting Minnesota past Colorado.

Clint Barmes had 3 hits for the Rockies, who have lost six straight and eight of 11.

Diamondbacks 4, Tigers 3: Eric Byrnes broke out of a monthlong slump with a homer and 2 RBI, Dan Haren pitched 7 innings, and host Arizona rallied past slumping Detroit.

Haren (5-2) scattered 6 hits and allowed 3 runs for the Diamondbacks, who came back from a 3-1 deficit with 3 runs in the seventh en route to their fourth straight victory.
