Batavia worker hospitalized after falling from a ladder

A city of Batavia employee was hospitalized after being injured trying to repair electrical equipment Friday.

Electrical crews responded to the city's electrical substation on Shumway Avenue at about 8:40 a.m. after a power outage.

A dove had flown under wildlife protection obstacles and into several pieces of piping, destroying some equipment, city officials said.

"He really did a number on it," said Steve Lusted, the electric division's field operations supervisor.

Power was restored by 9:10 a.m., Lusted said.

A little later, the electric department veteran was working on a ladder at the site when there was a flash and he fell, Assistant City Administrator Randy Recklaus said.

It's still unclear if his injuries were related to a shock or the fall, but he did have burns, Recklaus said. The injuries are not life-threatening and he was in good spirits Friday afternoon, he said.

Lusted said the department would look into how and why the accident occurred.

"We need to do an investigation to make sure nothing like that happens again," he said.
