U of I Global Campus enrollment and revenue low

CHAMPAIGN -- Enrollment and revenue continue to lag at the University of Illinois' new virtual campus, but officials believe the project is starting to gain momentum.

Global Campus enrollment is 42 -- far less than the 250 that'd been expected by now.

Chet Gardner oversees the campus, and he told university trustees Thursday that tuition revenue so far has been $100,000. That's half a million dollars less than expected, although the online campus is still spending less than its budget allows.

Gardner says he underestimated how long it would take to successfully market the Global Campus. But he says 200 students have applied for fall classes.

Trustees agreed to loan the Global Campus $3.4 million for next year.
