Government urges Supreme Court to deny George Ryan's bail appeal
The federal government urged a Supreme Court justice to deny former Illinois Governor George Ryan's request for bail while he appeals his corruption conviction.
Justice John Paul Stevens had asked the government to reply in writing to a petition for bail filed with him by lawyers for Ryan and co-defendant Larry Warner last week.
In his brief, Solicitor General Paul Clement wrote that Ryan and Warner do not demonstrate the "extraordinary circumstances" required for bail in such cases.
Ryan and Warner have been free on bond since their April 2006 convictions.
But the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last month effectively canceled their bonds and told them to pack up and head for prison this week.
