Briefs: Retired teachers to meet

Retired teachers to meet: Fox Valley Retired Educators will meet at 11:30 a.m. May 13 for a luncheon and program at Rex's Cork and Fork, 1317 E. Main St., St. Charles. Officer Tim Beam, crime prevention officer for the St. Charles Police Department will discuss senior security and identity theft. Cost is $16. East writer recognized

St. Charles East High School senior Charles Tan Lim was recognized recently for news writing in the 2007 American Society of Newspaper Editors, Quill and Scroll International Writing and Photo Contest. Tan Lim, who is editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, received a National Award Gold Key and is now eligible to apply for a $500 scholarship from the Edward J. Nell Memorial. Tan Lim was recognized for a report on cheating, which was among more than 3,000 contest submissions in 12 different categories. The recognition "really makes me feel like I've accomplished something," he said in a District 303 news release. Tan Lim plans to attend the University of Illinois next year.

Earth Day events planned

The St. Charles Park District will have an Earth Day celebration from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Campton Hills Park, located at Peck and Campton Hills roads. The event includes musical entertainment by Steven Keefe and the Family Jug Band. There also will be a Clydesdale-drawn hayride "eco-tour" of Campton Hills Park, exhibits and environmentally friendly activities. Admission is free. Call (630) 513-4346.

Orchestra raising money

The Wredling Middle School orchestra will have its third annual pancake breakfast fundraiser from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday in the school cafeteria, 1200 Dunham Road, St. Charles. Admission is $5 and includes all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, coffee and orange juice, as well as a live orchestra performance. Proceeds go toward buying new instruments. Call (630) 443-3360.

North softball fundraiser

The St. Charles North High School Softball Boosters will have a car-wash fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Valley Springs Auto Spa, 3244 W. MainStreet fundraiser

Gourmet specialties from local chefs will be the main course at the "FoxFare" fundraiser for Batavia MainStreet May 4 at the Fox Valley Country Club. Chefs will provide sample portions of their signature dishes. There will also be a silent auction and live music from the Batavia High School string quartet. Restaurants participating include Bistro Thai, Desserts by Amy, Nosh, Enticing Cuisine and Upper Crust. Tickets are $45 and the deadline to buy is Wednesday.
