Coast Guard ends search for missing kayaker

The U.S. Coast Guard has stopped searching for a man reported missing on Lake Michigan.

Crews had looked off the Waukegan coastline Sunday and this morning for Walter Doroba, 44, but ended the effort about 1 p.m.

"We have saturated the search area, four or five times over, looking for him," said Petty Officer 3rd Class Bill Colclough, a Coast Guard spokesman. "The search is over, unless we receive credible information about his whereabouts."

Doroba, whose hometown was not immediately known, disappeared Sunday afternoon. He had gone kayaking about 4 p.m., and his family had expected him home by 6 p.m., authorities said.

Doroba's overturned canoe was spotted about 5 p.m. Sunday roughly one mile from shore, the Coast Guard said. His life vest and registration were found onshore near the city’s ComEd station.

A Coast Guard board and a helicopter were part of the search effort, but crews did not find Doroba. The Lake County sheriff's office also was involved in the search.
