Please reconsider cuts to fine arts

I'm just sickened over the fact that District 214 is planning to cut out many of the fine arts programs. I am a proud alumni of Hersey High School and my husband of Wheeling High School. We were excited to send our children to Hersey to provide them with the same opportunities that we had in high school, yet it appears that may not happen.

My son has enjoyed guitar for many years and has been looking forward to taking guitar, being one great incentive to start high school.

My husband and I decided to raise our family in this area mainly because of the great schools, forgoing the larger home for less money, knowing what a great education they'd receive at District 214.

I am so disappointed and frustrated to know that of all the programs that could be cut, they've chosen fine arts vs. water polo or badminton. What are we teaching our kids -- sports are the only things that count!

Please don't misunderstand; I'm a huge advocate for sports. My kids are very involved in sports through local park districts and they plan to continue in high school, but so much emphasis is placed on the athletic programs and the recognition that is given through sports, and much less on many of the fine arts.

I'm hoping for a change in the board's decision to have a well rounded school that all children will enjoy, no matter what interests they may have.
