Schaumburg challenges residents to get on track to better fitness
The village of Schaumburg is accepting a national challenge to improve physical fitness and is looking for the participation of residents and workers.
The six-week program is called the National President's Challenge, organized by the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and aimed at getting the nation up and moving.
Participants can sign up for the challenge and track their progress online. Visit presidentschallenge.org to register as an individual or group.
Youths ages 6 to 17 are encouraged to aim for at least 60 minutes of activity five days a week, while adults should get at least 30 minutes of activity five days a week.
Mayor Al Larson is personally encouraging participation among people who want to set a positive new habit and maintain physical fitness for life.

April at the library: A new month has brought a new crop of activities and programs at the Schaumburg Township District Library.
The Chicago Foodways Roundtable and Schaumburg Historical Society will sponsor "The History of Pies" from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday in the Rasmussen South Room. The program will cover the evolution of the pie from meal to dessert, as well as what different regions have contributed to it over time.
Writers can gain valuable insight and tips from Libby Fischer Hellmann, author of "A Shot to Die For" and "Chicago Blues," during "20-20-20: Dialog, Plot, Research" from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Rasmussen South Room.
Parents and grandparents of kids ages 3 to 5 are invited to attend "Ready to Read" from 11:30 to 11:45 a.m. Wednesday in the Youth Services classroom. During the mini-workshop, Early Childhood Librarian Nancy O'Connell will provide simple techniques to prepare children to read. During the workshop, kids may attend Preschool Storytime.
Adults 50 and over can attend the two-part "AARP Safe Driving Course" from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday in the Rasmussen South Room. This eight-hour refresher course will provide a review of driving skills and techniques, as well as strategies and tips.

Trickster Gallery events: Today's Friday night movie at the American Indian Center's Trickster Gallery at 190 S. Roselle Road in Schaumburg is "The New World." Admission, as usual, is $5.
At 1 p.m. Saturday, the gallery will screen Disney's "Pocahontas," while guest Irene Bedard, the voice of Pocahontas, will sign autographs and perform musically with her husband, Deni. This will be followed by the film "Naturally Native," in which Bedard also stars.
Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under.
The remaining Friday night movies for the month are "Windwalker" April 11, "Edge of America" April 18 and "Spirit Rider" April 25.
There also will be craft workshops for $15 each on April Saturdays at 2 p.m.
The April 12 workshop is to make medicine wheels, the April 19 workshop is for dreamcatchers and the April 16 one is for key rings.
