Check out what's going on in District 300 on Saturday

What are you doing this weekend?

Before you think of an excuse, I'm not asking you on a date.

But Community Unit District 300 board President Joe Stevens is.

Stevens and his board colleagues are hosting the second of three town hall meetings from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Dundee Township Senior Center, 665 Barrington Ave., Carpentersville.

With the town hall meetings, board members hope to improve communication between the board and the public in an informal setting.

But that can't happen unless you show up to the meeting with questions and concerns.

High school stages musical: If you're free this weekend or next, wipe off your angel face and go back to Huntley High School.

The school is mounting six performances of "Grease," featuring sophomore Kelsey Rosenorn as Sandy and senior Brian Esposito as Danny.

The first show is at 7 p.m. today. The show also runs at 7 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday; and 7 p.m. April 25-26 and 3 p.m. April 27.

The performances will be at the Performing Arts Center at the high school, 13719 Harmony Road.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors. For tickets, visit www.district158.org/pac or call (847) 659-6515.

Orientation at high school: Listen up, incoming parents and students. Huntley High School is hosting freshman orientation night from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. April 29.

The high school will offer three information sessions on the high school, the Freshman Academy, sports and activities.

Students will also be on hand to provide tours and answer any questions.

You should park in the lots to the east and south of the school and enter through doors 22 or 24. Students will greet you and direct you to your first session.

Any questions? Call Greta Rakow, dean of the Freshman Academy, at (847) 659-6505.

Band premieres new piece: It's not often that even professional ensembles get to premiere new works.

The band students at Heineman Middle School will have that rare opportunity next month, when they'll perform "Whispering Pines," a piece written for them by renowned tuba soloist and composer Michael Forbes.

"Whispering Pines" is the result of several months of collaboration between Forbes and the students.

The band will perform the piece at a concert sponsored by the District 158 Education Foundation, to be held at 7 p.m. May 15 at the middle school, 750 Academic Drive, Algonquin.

The band is inviting local residents who play tuba, trombone, baritone or euphonium to participate in the performance.

To join the performance, or if you have any questions, call Pam Jorgensen at (847) 659-4482.
