Mass roadkill grave now covered
GOODFIELD -- The Illinois Department of Transportation says it intends to keep on using part of the median on Interstate 74 in Woodford County as a mass grave for roadkill, but it is eliminating the horrendous smell from the site.
Nearly two dozen dead deer, plus a lot of smaller animals, were recently dumped into a ditch on the median just west of the Mackinaw River.
The site attracted attention _ and several feet of putrid rainwater _ because IDOT workers left it uncovered until after the (Peoria) Journal Star reported its presence.
IDOT now says the carcasses have been covered up, and that workers will also cover up any future pits and ditches within a few days of use _ at least during warm weather.
