Algonquin trustees extend deal with Comcast to allow talks to continue

Algonquin trustees on Tuesday extended the town's franchise agreement with Comcast, giving both entities time to negotiate a more permanent agreement.

The village is in the midst of working on an ordinance that would let the cable company continue operating in Algonquin's right of ways.

In one form or another, Comcast has provided the village's cable service for at least 10 years, said Assistant Village Manager Jenna Kollings.

The existing agreement is nonexclusive, meaning the village can entertain overtures from other cable companies.

And as part of the agreement, Algonquin receives five percent of Comcast's gross revenues, Kollings said.

The extension, which expires May 30, means there will be no change in service for local customers.
