Briefs: Bicyclist injured in crash
A 50-year-old Arlington Heights bicyclist was hospitalized Thursday with injuries to the head and both legs after a collision with an SUV late Thursday, Arlington Heights police said. The rider was southbound on Kennicott Drive and ran a red light, officer David Hajek said. He was struck by a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero XL SUV on eastbound Palatine Road driven by a 29-year-old woman from Waukegan, police said. The woman had a green light, police said. The bicyclist was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights with injuries that didn't appear to be life-threatening. Citations are pending for the bike rider, Hajek said.
Grocery store robbed:
A Des Plaines grocery store was robbed about 8 p.m. Wednesday, police said. The robber pointed a handgun at the clerk at Aldi, 1365 S. Lee St., and demanded all the money from the cash register, Des Plaines police said. The clerk gave the money, and the robber fled. No one was injured.
Two projects get more time:
Two projects in Des Plaines have won extensions. Nick Mitchell, who owns Grazie Ristorante at 1050 E. Oakton St., received alderman approval for another two-year extension to build the Riviera, a high-rise senior community project, next to the restaurant. One resident told aldermen he opposed the project, which has been controversial since it surfaced seven years ago. Des Plaines aldermen this week also backed a one-year extension for a 40-unit condominium building at 1382-98 Prairie Ave.
