Writer is advocate for McCain agenda
In response to Marvin Johnson's "Democracy needs commitment" (April 7) critique of my April 2 letter about a "sad state of affairs," it is not my intention to sift through his lengthy litany of illogic and non-stop nonsequiturs, other than to observe that he only succeeded in giving away what his game really is: advocacy of John McCain's agenda for the open-ended occupation of the Middle East.
Minimizing the cost of more than 4,000 U.S. troops dead already, Mr. Johnson calls for the U.S. military to engage in a quest to change the "cultural and national habits" of the Iraqis, no matter how long it takes, as he contends we should have done with the Vietnamese. Never mind that over 58,000 of our finest lost their lives in that particular quest.
Mr. Johnson conveniently ignores the fact that we were never attacked by (or even credibly threatened by) those people. Nor does he express any concern whatsoever for their prolonged suffering as a result of our invasions. He is apparently too busy waxing nostalgic about WWII "victory gardens" to take present-day reality into account.
It is almost as though Mr. Johnson and Mr. McCain have emerged confused from a time warp of imperialist, neo-colonialist thinking. Scary!
Scarier still is the prospect of a John McCain administration with Joe Lieberman whispering in his ear!
