Steady rain can't dampen 5-4 victory for Grenadiers

Under a steady rainfall from start to finish, Elk Grove bounced back from its only loss of the season to edge host York 5-4 at the Bryan Middle School softball field in Elmhurst.

One day after producing a bunt single for their only hit in a 3-1 loss to visiting Maine West, the Grenadiers collected 11 hits Thursday and improved their record to 4-1.

Sophomore Stephanie Maday (3-0) went all 7 innings, striking out 11 and walking one.

Top hitters for the Grenadiers were Nikki Goranson (2-for-4, double, RBI), Stephanie Dolce (2-for-4, double, 1 run, RBI), Kayla Mahoney (2-for-4, double, RBI, 1 run), Caitlin Garrison (2-for-3, RBI, 1 run) and Brittany Tranchita, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI, triple and double.

The Grenadiers scored twice in the first and had the bases loaded with one out but could not score again.

They fell behind 3-2 in the bottom of the inning before taking the lead for good with a run in the third and 2 more in the fourth.

Grens sophomore shortstop Olivia Roback helped pace the defense with 4 assists.

Maine West 1, Waukegan 0:Œ One day after tossing a 1-hitter for a 3-1 win at Elk Grove, junior Emily Ott fired another 1-hitter to help Maine West beat host Waukegan.

She struck out five and walked two while belting 2 doubles to pace the Warriors (5-2), who have won five straight.

Fenton 1, Leyden 0: The host Eagles slipped to 3-3 as sophomore Dana Thomas suffered a tough nonconference loss.
