Reagan adviser to speak at breakfast
An adviser to President Ronald Reagan who was a key figure in the Iran-Contra scandal will headline the upcoming Lake County National Day of Prayer breakfast.
Robert McFarlane, a national security adviser to Reagan, will speak at the event, set for May 1 at the Midlane Country Club, 4555 W. Yorkhouse Road, Waukegan.
The event will be moderated by Sandy Rios, a talk-radio host and the former president of a conservative group called Concerned Women for America.
McFarlane, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and a Marine officer, was Reagan's deputy national security adviser and then the national security adviser from 1983 to 1985.
McFarlane also was a key figure in the Iran-Contra affair, which concerned the sale of weapons to Iran and the funding of rebels in Nicaragua in a secret arms-for-hostages deal that became public in the mid-1980s.
He was pardoned by President George H.W. Bush in 1992, along with others involved in the scandal.
The breakfast is part of the annual National Day of Prayer, an event launched in 1952. Although people of all faiths are invited to pray, the event emphasizes Christianity.
The first Lake County breakfast was held in 2005. Previous speakers have included conservative author and activist Phyllis Schlafly and Chicago Bears chaplain Harry Swayne.
The event will begin at 6:45 a.m., with breakfast set to be served at 7:15 a.m.
Admission is $25 per person or $200 for a table of eight people. Advanced registration is required.
