Drought finally over for Tigers

The Tigers finally showed the offense that earned them preseason raves -- and ended their winless start.

Detroit beat the host Boston Red Sox 7-2 Wednesday night after scoring just 15 runs in losing its first seven games.

Marcus Thames and Carlos Guillen homered, Edgar Renteria had 3 hits, and Ivan Rodriguez got the 2,500th hit of his career.

No team has made the postseason after an 0-7 start.

One day after the Red Sox (4-5) received their World Series rings in a pregame ceremony then kept Detroit reeling with a 5-0 win, the Tigers came alive after managing just 1 hit in the first three innings.

With one out in the fourth, Lester walked Cabrera and Guillen. Then Renteria tied the game with a 2-run double to left. Thames, who stranded a runner at second with an inning-ending groundout in the second, then hit a 3-2 pitch over the Green Monster in left field.

Jeremy Bonderman (1-1) had fallen behind 2-0 in the second when the Red Sox loaded the bases on a single by Sean Casey, a walk to J.D. Drew and an error by second baseman Placido Polanco on Jason Varitek's grounder. Jacoby Ellsbury then walked, forcing in a run, and Julio Lugo singled in another.

In the eighth, Rodriguez became the 87th player with 2,500 hits when he broke an 0-for-15 slump with a single.

Angels 9, Indians 5: Mike Napoli hit his first career grand slam, a second-inning drive that powered Los Angeles over visiting Cleveland.

Garret Anderson, Casey Kotchman and Vladimir Guerrero also homered for the Angels, who dropped Paul Byrd to 0-2 this season.

Mariners 7, Rays 1: Jarrod Washburn allowed 1 run in 7 innings, and Jamie Burke hit a 3-run homer to lead Seattle past host Tampa Bay.

Washburn (1-1) gave up 6 hits, and improved to 11-3 at Tropicana Field against the Rays.

Rays outfielder Cliff Floyd will have surgery on Friday to repair a meniscus tear in his right knee.

Royals 4, Yankees 0: Zack Greinke threw 8 scoreless innings, and host Kansas City defeated banged-up New York on a rainy night.

Greinke gave up 6 hits, walked two and struck out two, lowering his earned run average to 0.60. He has won both of his starts this season.

A's 6, Blue Jays 3: Mark Ellis had 4 hits, including the tying triple in the ninth, then scored the go-ahead run in Oakland's win over host Toronto.

Ellis went 4-for-5 with a pair of stolen bases and an RBI.
