Briefs: Party to honor legend

Photo essay to kick off

To help celebrate cultural diversity during its Tapestry of Freedom project, the Gail Borden Public Library today opens a photographic exhibit that runs through April 20. "Multiculture Elgin" is an exhibit of 20 portraits of Elgin residents representing numerous cultures, such as Greece, Nigeria, Mexico, Poland, Thailand and Ghana. Photographer Marina Makropoulos will talk about her project at 7 p.m. today at the library, 270 N. Grove Ave. Call (847) 429-4698.

Meet the Chipmunks

Alvin and Chipmunks will take the stage for three fun-filled musical extravaganzas at 3, 4:30 and 6 p.m. Friday at Spring Hill Mall, Routes 31 and 72, in West Dundee. There will be a meet and greet after each performance. Call (847) 428-2200.

Algonquin celebrates art

The village of Algonquin and the Algonquin Public Arts Commission will hold a spring art open house from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at village hall. The event will help residents learn more about the village's award-winning public arts program, while they view some of the pieces now display. Refreshments will be served. Call (847) 683-4184.

Hop for your health

The Kane County Health Department is accepting registrations for its ninth annual Healthy Hop, a 5K race that includes a 1-Mile Fun Run and the Tots Hop on Saturday. The entry fee is $15 on race day. Register online at www.kanehealth.com and follow the Healthy Hop links.

More Elgin spring cleaning

April is free brush pickup for Elgin residents. On your regular trash day, crews will pick up bagged leaves, branches and other yard waste without the need for a $2 sticker. The large paper bags still cost between $2.50 and $3. You also may bundle yard waste to avoid paying for the bag.
