Briefs: Escort raids debit card

A Buffalo Grove resident reported to police that an escort he'd hired had taken more than $8,000 from his bank account without his consent. Police said that the man, who lives on the 500 block of Vernon Lane, hired the escort and gave her his debit card and pin number. He said the bank called him and told him his account was reporting a negative balance. Police said the theft occurred sometime between 6 p.m. April 2 and 3 p.m. April 7. The man closed his account after the transactions.

Democrat official named

The Cook County Democratic Party tonight will install Kathleen Sances, 48, of Arlington Heights, as the new Wheeling Township Democratic committeeman. She replaces Patrick Botterman, 44, who died last month of a heart attack. Following the 7 p.m. ceremony at the Wheeling-Palatine Democratic headquarters, 1310 W. Northwest Hwy. in Arlington Heights, Cook County Commissioners Forrest Claypool and Michael Quigley will speak about county board reform. Sances said she's been active in the township organization since 2003, running the office as a volunteer in 2004, running for township trustee in 2005 and serving as president of the township party's 10-member executive committee in recent years.

More special events funds

Des Plaines is giving its special events commission some extra funding. Aldermen have approved plans to give the commission an additional $20,000, for a total of $30,000 this year. The commission hosts three major events every year: the Taste of Des Plaines and the Fourth of July celebration and New Year's Eve celebrations. The extra money will help cover the commission's plans to spend $3,000 to hire Thillens Inc. to handle beer sales at the Taste of Des Plaines. Eighth Ward Alderman Rosemary Argus opposed the extra expense, saying she heard from residents who don't want public dollars spent on special events.

This is not a test

Hoffman Estates' public access cable TV channel will be down from 6 p.m. today to 9 a.m. Thursday while the village hall is without electricity. The shutdown is in conjunction with the village hall remodeling project. Regularly scheduled programming will resume after construction is finished.
