Dorsey leads Wauconda past Round Lake

Wauconda relied on quarterback Garrett Dorsey's arm and its rushing attack to defeat host Round Lake 39-22 in a North Suburban Conference Prairie Division football game on Friday night.

Colin McKenzie led the Bulldogs' balanced running attack with 2 touchdowns, while Dorsey completed 10 of 14 attempts for 214 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown pass to Nick Jay.

"The line opened up the holes and I just followed them," McKenzie said. "We came out flat in the first quarter and then the leaders talked to the team and we just tried to encourage the rest of the team to play better."

McKenzie took a handoff up the middle for 5 yards to cap an 80-yard drive, and he then ran for the two-point converstion to give Wauconda an 8-0 lead with 7:33 left in the first quarter.

Three minutes later, the Panthers tied the score as John Strickland took a handoff from quarterback Matt Ortiz and scooted down the sideline for a 46-yard touchdown. Strickland then tied the score at 8-8 with a two-point conversion.

After Wauconda's Michael Mrohen kicked a 28-yard field goal midway through the second quarter, the Bulldogs blew the game apart by scoring 28 unanswered points.

Panthers coach John Coursey blamed himself for the scoring onslaught.

"It was my mistake," Coursey said. "It was 11-8 and all week, I had been telling the guys that I believe in you. But instead of trying to run the clock out, we called a couple of pass plays that failed and they scored two touchdowns in a row and that changed the momentum of the game."

Round Lake rallied with 14 points late in the fourth quarter as Ortiz scored on a 6-yard keeper and an 11-yard sweep.

Bulldogs coach Glen Kozlowski was happy with the way his team played.

"Let's give Round Lake credit in that they gave us a good game," he said. "But I was happy with the way our guys, especially Dorsey and McKenzie, played out there,"

Barrington 39, BG 14: If there was any doubt that Barrington could be the cream of the crop in the Mid-Suburban League, the Broncos proved it Friday night.

The Broncos (4-0) built a 39-0 lead at the end of three quarters and coasted to a 39-14 win over visting Buffalo Grove (2-2) in an MSL divisional crossover.

Quarterback Cody Seeger led the Barrington offense in accounting for 2 rushing and 2 passing touchdowns.

Seeger credited offensive linemen Eric Zenter, Adam Sellner, Trevor Laue, Mike Ingram and Gus Handler.

"The credit goes to the offensive line and receivers tonight," Seeger said. "It's easy to do a lot of things behind them. We have a 'SEP' goal. That is, to Score on Every Possession. In the first half we scored 4 touchdowns and a field goal."

Seeger (10-for-12, 127 yards) threw a pair of first-quarter touchdowns. One went to Kevin Crowley for 7 yards; another went 25 yards to Daniel Evers, who fended off two receivers to make the catch in the end zone and a 14-0 lead.

Sam Ojuri made it 21-0 on an 18-yard run with 9:02 left in the first half. Ojuri finished with 103 yards in 15 attempts.

A 30-yard field field goal by Ryan Murach and a 1-yard touchdown run by Seeger finished off the half with Barrington up 30-0.

"We were fortunate to come out of the nonconference part of our schedule 4-0," Barrington coach Joe Sanchez said. - Greg Swiderski
