Cat rescued from Lombard house fire

Firefighters rescued a cat while extinguishing a residential fire in Lombard Tuesday morning, officials said.

Emergency crews from the Lombard Fire Department responded about 9:50 a.m. to the house fire at 759 S. Elizabeth St.

Acting Battalion Chief Marty Coomes said it took firefighters about 30 minutes to put out the flames.

The residents who live in the house weren't home when the fire started. Firefighters saved the family's pet cat while searching the basement.

The cat was unharmed, officials said. However, a police officer was treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation.

Coomes said the fire, which started in a bedroom, was contained to the first floor of the house. Total damage is estimated at about $120,000, he said.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.

"The initial impression is that it is electrical in nature," Coomes said. "But these investigations go on for another day or so."

Crews from the Villa Park and York Center fire departments assisted in battling the blaze.
