Why no support to suspend gas tax?
Isn't it a bit ironic that one of the most populist ideas to come forth during this election cycle, the abeyance of collecting gas taxes between Memorial Day and Labor Day, came from a Republican, Sen. John McCain?
The sound of begrudging applause and hoorays from his Democrat opponents is truly deafening.
Can all this silent celebration be rooted in the Democrats belief that higher gasoline prices are actually good in helping eliminate greenhouse gases, i.e. higher prices mean less driving?
And can both Democrats and Republicans be silently opposed to this tax break because higher gas taxes help fund dubious biofuels production and research and prop up the obscene and totally unwarranted agricultural price supports?
Abolitioning the gas tax, if only for little over three months, gores too many special interest policies. God forbid, the actual taxpayer gets any direct, tangible benefit from its presidential contenders or Congress.
