Library program to explain recycling

The Indian Trails Public Library District will celebrate Earth Month with "Ricky Recycle," an event to educate kids on the importance of recycling and bettering the environment, from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at Indian Trails Library, 355 S. Schoenbeck Road, Wheeling. Ricky Recycle uses song and dance to teach children in kindergarten through fifth grade the benefits of recycling and how materials are processed to make new products. Local string quartet selected to perform

A string quartet from Buffalo Grove High School was selected among the finest 12 high school string ensembles in the state to perform in the annual Allerton String Chamber Music Symposium at Allerton Park in Monticello, Ill., April 18 and 19. Student string ensembles are chosen each year from submitted audition recordings. Each visiting ensemble rehearses under the supervision of a University of Illinois faculty member or graduate student and participates in a recital.

This year's quartet from BGHS are seniors Stephanie Gates and Angie Kalaytowicz on violin, Samantha Gurewitz on viola and Shawn Mitchum on cello.

Celebrate Buffalo Grove's 50th

The Village of Buffalo Grove is selling special 50th Anniversary commemorative license plates. These are valid Illinois plates that will display the Village of Buffalo Grove's 50th Anniversary logo, and can be displayed on vehicles from July 4 to Sept. 1, 2008. Vehicle registration must be valid through Sept. 30, 2008.

Plate numbers will be issued at random. Plates will be mailed from the Secretary of State's office prior to the display date.

Complete the application on the Village's Web site at www.vbg.org and return it with $25. Deadline is June 12. Call (847) 459-2511.

Performers, sign up for Limelight Café

The village of Buffalo Grove's Arts Commission is coordinating a "Limelight Cafe" program for young adults ages 14 to 19 from 7:30 to 11 p.m. April 25 at eSkape Entertainment Center, 350 McHenry Road, Buffalo Grove. Young adults will have an opportunity to perform before an audience of their peers. Bands, soloists, comedians and more can bring their act to the stage. Performers must sign up by e-mailing BGArts@vbg.org, or sign up at the Buffalo Grove High School or Stevenson High School Student Activity Offices. The cost for attendees is $5; no charge for performers.
