Barrington High has 'Java and Jazz'

The Barrington High School jazz bands will present their "Java and Jazz" concert at 7 p.m. Friday in the school cafeteria, 616 W. Main St.

The concert, held in a casual coffee house setting, will feature the school's jazz ensemble, Rithum Machine, jazz big bands and combos. Guest artist for the night is Chicago-based composer and saxophonist Bret Spainhour.

The concert is open to the public. Admission costs $5, $3 for students, and free for senior citizens and children 10 and younger. For more information, call (847) 842-3214.

Spring Into Spring with Shelter Inc.

The Shelter Inc. Auxiliary and Chicago Botanic Garden invite all gardeners to attend "Spring Into Spring With The Shelter Inc. Auxiliary and the Chicago Botanic Garden," at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

The demonstration and hands-on workshop will be led by professionals at the Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake-Cook Road, Glencoe. Guests will enjoy a continental breakfast while receiving instruction in the art of gardening. After the workshop, attendees can walk among 385 acres of woods, waterways, 23 formal gardens and three natural areas.

The $65 admission includes parking, continental breakfast, instruction and supplies. All proceeds benefit Shelter's programs. For information, call (847) 590-6188, ext. 22, or visit shelter-inc.org.

Hear discussion on global religions

Countryside Church in Palatine invites the public to hear Jim Kenney, director of Deerfield-based Common Ground, speak about what the world's great religions have in common.

The program, "Movement: The Global Convergence of Religions," takes place at 1 p.m. Sunday at the church, 1025 N. Smith Road. Reservations are requested.
