Barrington suggests re-routing bike race

A plan to bring a cycling race to Barrington needs some serious rethinking before officials will consider approving it. On Monday, village trustees discussed a proposal to hold an RDS Cycling race in the Fox Point subdivision.

Barrington Police Chief Jeff Lawler said the Woodstock-based cycling club would host the race, which would have about a mile-long course. "They just ride continuously around it," Lawler said.

Holding the race, which would last at least six hours, in the Fox Point subdivision is what concerned trustees.

Trustee Beth Raseman said she didn't know how you could close off a subdivision for such a long time. "I would say no (to holding the race) in Fox Point," she said.

"It is really cool, but I don't think you could do it there."

Trustees said they might support the race if there were a way to hold it closer to the downtown, which could drive up revenue at local businesses.

"It is definitely exciting and unique," said Trustee Tim Roberts of the race.

Trustees did, however, like the idea of a run to be held before the Freedom Festival in September.

Lawler said organizers are planning the run as a way to draw more interest in the event, which is held as a way to show support for the men and women in the U.S. military.

"The idea is that this will bring a larger audience to the area," Lawler said. The first 9.11 Mile Freedom Run is scheduled for Sept. 6.

Also on Monday, trustees began laying out plans for a new guide that will help those in the community who are planning special events. The manual will explain what permits are needed, what types of fees are involved and who are the right people to field questions. The guide, which is still in the development stage, will also spell out how an event qualifies for village services or funds.

"We are trying to make it one-stop shopping," said Village President Karen Darch.
