Cubs recall Marshall, send Pignatiello to Iowa
The Chicago Cubs recalled left-handed pitcher Sean Marshall from Triple-A Iowa today and optioned lefthander Carmen Pignatiello to the Triple-A club in Des Moines.
Marshall, 25, made just one start in Triple-A this season before today's recall to Chicago, tossing 3.0 hitless innings with no walks and six strikeouts Friday against Round Rock. The southpaw spent all of spring training with the major league club, going 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA in seven appearances (two starts) before being optioned to Iowa on March 30, the day before the Cubs' opener vs. Milwaukee.
Marshall has spent most of the last two seasons in the big leagues with the Cubs. Last season, he went 7-8 with a 3.92 ERA in 21 appearances, all but two as a starter, with Chicago. Overall, Marshall is 13-17 with a 4.83 ERA (78 ER/125.2 IP) in 45 major league appearances (43 starts).
Pignatiello was a member of the Cubs Opening Day roster for the first time in his career and made two relief appearances this season, posting no record and a 13.50 ERA (2 ER/2.2 IP)
