Try compromise to produce G.I. bil

Sen. Obama wants a G.I. bill and Sen. McCain doesn't care for his plan. Both candidates have good points regarding a G.I. bill.

Sen. McCain believes Obama's bill would entice trained people to leave the military when their enlistment is over. That may be the case, but there certainly is some middle ground here.

Here is a suggestion:

Pattern it somewhat after the military academies where a person graduates from an academy and owes six years of service to the country.

Maybe after an enlistment (two, three or four years), an enlistee could be awarded funds under a G.I. bill from the government to acquire a college education and then be required to return to the military for a certain amount of time.

After attaining a degree, the individual could be offered a commission and re-enter as an officer.

The terms could be worked out before putting the bill before Congress.

This is a thought that needs some fine tuning, I know. A G.I. bill is a fine idea. We owe those who have put themselves in harms way in the service of our country.

Compromise is the answer to bring a G.I. bill to fruition.
