Lightning, storms cancel Seeger Invitational

Like a good distance runner, Sycamore athletic director Tim Carlson was willing to go the distance in order to wait out the storms at the Seeger Invitational Friday night, but unfortunately for Carlson and the visiting 10 schools competing, the lightning and the rain eventually won the race.

Two years ago Sycamore installed warning alarm sensors that track lightning and electrical currents in the atmosphere within an eight-mile radius.

Those alarms sounded at 5:40 p.m. causing a delay in the preliminary events. By 7:15, they had not received a clear signal, and then came the downpour along with a tornado watch for the area surrounding DeKalb County.

The meet was eventually canceled just after 8 p.m., and as of press time, the meet had not been rescheduled.

Geneva, Kaneland and Marmion were all scheduled to compete, and will now look to get in one more weekend tuneup at the Kane County meet next Friday before turning their attention on conference competition.
