Buffalo Grove business has the sporting life
If you're in the market for an autographed jersey or baseball card, you may score at a Buffalo Grove retailer.
Chicagoland Sports Cards & Memorabilia opened about four months ago at 793 S. Buffalo Grove Road. Autographed jerseys, balls, pictures and mini-helmets are included in the selection.
Marc Goldsmith, 29, and his father, Les, own and operate the business, where 10 showcases of single sports cards are for sale. Goldsmith explained that he rents out the cases to customers to sell their cards. "The stuff is always fresh," he said.
The entrepreneur also gives shoppers an opportunity to sell their own merchandise through a weekly auction, similar to eBay, run at the store. A Frank Thomas autographed bat and jersey are currently for sale.
The focus at the shop is Chicago athletes. Chicago Bears wide receiver and kick returner Devin Hester is one of the hottest athletes right now, Marc said. He carries an autographed jersey with a $496 price tag and game-used gloves with his autograph selling for $625.
Other hot picks include Chicago Blackhawks rookies Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. "They're two of the hottest athletes in hockey right now," Marc said.
He added that he has some Michael Jordan merchandise, including a jersey that's selling for $1,895.
All autographed merchandise comes with a certificate of authenticity, Marc said. He added that he started doing card shows in 1990 with his father. They developed contacts in the industry and attend private signings to gather merchandise for the store.
Growing up in Lake Zurich, Marc said he has always enjoyed playing basketball and baseball and watching all sports.
One of his sports highlights is when he was in fourth grade and he made a basketball shot from midcourt. A friend of the family sent a video clip into the news and he was interviewed on TV by a Chicago sports anchor.
Prior to launching the business, the Arlington Heights resident worked as a buyer for the grocery store industry for three years.
Marc remembers buying his first pack of baseball cards in 1986. He believes the hobby is still growing strong. He added that he also carries a large line of supplies to protect cards and memorabilia.
The business is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. For more, call (847) 229-2636.
