U-46 high school holds prom for special needs students

On April 18, Elgin Area High School District U-46 held its first prom for special needs students.

"Spring Fling" featured teens decked out in gowns and tuxes; student-designed table centerpieces; tunes from "High School Musical," "Hannah Montana" and the Village People, all at the Bartlett Hills Golf Club.

Special-needs students have always been invited to take part in the various high schools' mainstream proms, South Elgin High School modified-learning program teacher Judy Williams said.

"This is a little smaller, a little more comfortable," Williams said. "Parents have the chance to attend the event with their kids."

From the looks of it, the event -- attended by students from all five U-46 schools -- left a smile on many faces.
