Brewers bats boom in rout

Bill Hall homered twice and had a career-high 6 RBI, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 13-4 rout of San Francisco in their home opener.

Prince Fielder went 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI, and Gabe Kapler drove in a pair of runs. The Brewers have won three of their first four games after taking two out of three from the Cubs in their season-opening series at Wrigley Field.

Carlos Villanueva (1-0) tied a career high with 6 strikeouts, going 5½ innings. Salomon Torres pitched 3 innings for his first save.

San Francisco starter Jonathan Sanchez (0-1) set a career high with 8 strikeouts. But it wasn't much of a day otherwise for Sanchez, who gave up 7 runs in 4-plus innings.

Cardinals 5, Nationals 4: Braden Looper gave the lightly-regarded St. Louis rotation its fourth straight stingy outing, and Rick Ankiel hit a 2-run home run in a victory over visiting Washington.

The surprising Cardinals are 3-1, two games above .500 for the first time since the end of the 2006 season, and handed the Nationals their second straight loss after a 3-0 start. Despite beginning the year with Chris Carpenter, Mark Mulder, Joel Pineiro and Matt Clement on the 15-day disabled list, Cardinals starters have allowed only 2 earned runs in 22¿ innings.

Cristian Guzman homered in a 3-run seventh that narrowed the gap to a run.

Jason Isringhausen allowed a hit and a walk but struck out three in the ninth for his second save.

Phillies 8, Reds 4: Chase Utley took his hitting tear against host Cincinnati into a new season, driving in 3 runs with a pair of homers that sent Philadelphia to a victory.

Utley hit a 2-run homer off Josh Fogg (0-1), who lasted only 4 innings in his Reds debut, and added a solo shot off left-hander Jeremy Affeldt for his 100th career homer.

The power-hitting second baseman has been at his best against the Reds lately, going 13-for-22 in his last six games against them with 7 homers and 13 RBI.

Pat Burrell also had a 2-run homer for the Phillies.

Kyle Kendrick (1-0), who led NL rookies with 10 wins last season, had a tough time getting his first of the new season. The right-hander gave up 4 runs, 8 hits and a pair of walks in 5-plus innings, getting pulled from the game after 94 pitches.

Ken Griffey Jr. drove in a pair of runs with a single and a double, passing Reggie Jackson for 16th on the career list with 1,702 RBI. Frank Robinson is next at 1,812.

Diamondbacks 8, Rockies 1: Arizona right-hander Micah Owings struck out a career-best nine batters and allowed just 1 run and 2 hits over 6¿ innings, and the visiting Diamondbacks pounded struggling Colorado.

Chad Qualls and Juan Cruz completed the 2-hitter, and Mark Reynolds homered, doubled and drove in 3 runs for the Diamondbacks, who watched the Rockies celebrate a sweep of the NL championship series the last time they were in town.

Owings (1-0) at one point retired 17 straight batters.

Mark Redman (0-1) allowed 5 runs, 4 earned, in 5¿ innings for Colorado.

Marlins 5, Pirates 4: Mike Jacobs homered off Pittsburgh reliever Franquelis Osoria leading off the ninth to give host Florida its second walk-off win of the young season.

Jacobs sent Osoria's 1-1 pitch over the right-field wall. Jacobs went 3-for-5 and scored 3 runs. Josh Willingham homered, and Hanley Ramirez had 3 hits for Florida.

Kevin Gregg (1-0) pitched 1 scoreless inning for the win.

Ryan Doumit hit his first home run for Pittsburgh.
