Cardinals clobber Cuerto, Reds
Joel Pineiro pitched 7 innings of 1-hit ball, and the host St. Louis Cardinals jumped on Cincinnati rookie Johnny Cueto for 7 runs in the first 2 innings en route to a 7-2 victory Tuesday night.
Troy Glaus and Rick Ankiel combined for 4 hits and 5 RBI their first 2 at-bats for the Cardinals. Skip Schumaker tied his career best with 4 hits, and Albert Pujols walked off Josh Fogg in the eighth and has reached base safely in all 28 games.
Cueto (1-3) allowed 7 runs, 6 earned, on 8 hits in 1¿ innings in his sixth career start. The 22-year-old trailed 3-0 after retiring one batter and departed with a 5.40 ERA.
Pineiro (2-2) gave up a leadoff single to Corey Patterson and issued 3 of his 4 walks in the first 2 innings, then retired the last 12 batters in order, striking out three in 7 innings.
Mets 5, Pirates 4 (11): David Wright hit a single over a pulled in outfield with the bases loaded in the 11th inning, giving host New York the win over Pittsburgh after the Mets' bullpen wasted a 2-hit performance by Johan Santana.
Endy Chavez singled off John Van Benschoten (0-1), Pittsburgh's sixth pitcher, leading off the 11th. Van Benschoten balked to move Sanchez to second. Marlon Anderson sacrificed, and after Jose Reyes was walked intentionally -- he reached in all six plate appearances -- Luis Castillo walked.
Wright then hit a fly that just barely landed inside the right-field line, causing a delayed reaction from the players and fans.
Jorge Sosa (3-1), the Mets' seventh pitcher, worked one inning for the win.
Phillies 7, Padres 4: Cole Hamels had an impressive outing, and host Philadelphia beat San Diego, denying Greg Maddux his 350th career victory.
Hamels (3-3) allowed 5 hits, 2 runs and struck out six in 7½ innings. Tom Gordon worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and the Phillies scored four insurance runs in the bottom half.
Maddux (2-2) gave up 3 runs and 8 hits in 6½ innings. The four-time Cy Young award winner was trying for the third start to become the ninth pitcher in big league history to reach 350 wins.
Carlos Ruiz had a 2-run double, and pinch hitter Greg Dobbs added an RBI double as the Phillies broke it open in the eighth against Glendon Rusch and Kevin Cameron.
Scott Hairston hit a pair of homers for San Diego.
Nationals 6, Braves 3: Slumping Ryan Zimmerman spent some time working with Barry Larkin before the game, and then had a season-high 3 hits, including a homer and tiebreaking 2-run double, to lead host Washington past Atlanta.
Washington won for the fourth time in five games. The Braves, whose highlight was Chipper Jones' eighth homer, have lost three straight games.
Zimmerman and Nick Johnson hit consecutive solo shots in the third inning off Tom Glavine, who was coming off his first trip to the disabled list in a 22-season career. Zimmerman hadn't homered since April 2.
Then, in Washington's 4-run seventh, Zimmerman hit his double off reliever Blaine Boyer (0-3), who was charged with 4 runs and got only one out.
Saul Rivera (2-1) got the win by pitching a scoreless seventh.
Dodgers 7, Marlins 6: Jeff Kent's two-out single drove in Andre Ethier to break a ninth-inning tie and help Los Angeles beat host Miami to win its fourth straight game.
Ethier had walked with one out against Kevin Gregg (3-1) and took second on a groundout.
Joel Beimel (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth, and Takashi Saito pitched a perfect ninth for his third save in five chances.
The Dodgers won even though Derek Lowe was unable to protect a 6-1 lead. Dan Uggla hit his fourth homer for the Marlins, and they scored 3 unearned runs in the fifth for a 6-all tie.
