Elgin LWV: At the general election on Nov. 4, Illinois voters will be voting for more than just the next President of the United States. They also will be voting on the advisability of calling a constitutional convention in Illinois.

The Leagues of Women Voters in Illinois are now studying the issue to determine whether they will work for or against passage of this proposition, which occurs every 20 years in this state. If there were to be a state constitutional convention, delegates could draft an entirely new state constitution and/or draft new constitutional amendments, all of which would be subject to ratification by Illinois voters. If voters decide that a convention should be convened, it would be held in 2010.

At today's meeting, the Elgin Area League of Women Voters will be discussing the pros and cons of a constitutional convention and coming to a consensus as a League. League members will consider their constitutional convention positions using a study guide produced by the state convention committee.

All League members are encouraged to participate, and anyone interested in hearing about convention, and witnessing the League consensus process are invited to attend.

The consensus meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Tyler Towers, 1450 Plymouth Lane in Elgin. For information about this meeting or the Elgin area chapter call Janet Poyner, league president, at (847) 695-7122.
