Credit Matters: A free program describing credit reports, credit scores and their impact on a consumer's ability to buy, borrow and be insured will be presented at "Credit Matters" at 7 p.m. Thursday in the library's Business Room. Used book sale: The Friends of the Library host the Super Spring Used Book Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Books include history, children's and cookbooks.
This sale has a large selection of cookbooks, history and kids' books. Pick up a book bag for $10 to help carry home your bargains. No electronic devices -- scanners, laptops, cell phones, etc. -- are permitted for use during this sale.
On Saturday only, a silent auction will be held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and includes: "The Civil War," by Shelby Foote, three volumes from 1958-1974; Cubs and White Sox selections; "Big Band Jazz," by Albert McCarthy, 1974; "Jazz," by Ken Burns; 15 Dave Brubeck albums; America's Glorious Quilts by Dennis Duke, 1987; Ansel Adams' Autobiography, 1985; and "The Complete C.S. Lewis Signature Classics," 2002.
Teen Open Mic Night: Teens are invited for coffee and creative expression at the Library's Teen Open Mic Night 8:30-10 p.m. Saturday at Biggby Coffee shop, 21 S. Dunton. Read a poem of your choice, sing a song, or even perform a short comedy sketch. Performers will receive a free beverage, and discounts will be available. No registration needed.
April exhibits: The student artwork of Elk Grove High School students is on display in the Gallery during April. Display cases feature the Volunteer Center of Northwest Suburban Chicago, the History of the Arlington Heights Traveling Bank, and the Friends of the Library's Super Spring Book Sale April 26-27. Discount drug card: Arlington Heights residents may obtain a National Association of Counties discount drug at the library's reception desk on the second floor. This free card allows users to save 20 percent on prescription drugs not covered by their insurance. All residents are eligible, regardless of age, income or existing health coverage. Go green: Arlington Library's e-mail notification service saves you time and money for date due reminders, online renewals, and reserve notifications from the library. Donate your used books to the Friends of the Library to recycle their circulation for other people to buy. Sign up for an e-newsletter to save paper by sending it to your e-mail address. Junior library volunteer: Sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students can become a junior library volunteer and help with the summer reading program, "Get in the Game: Read!"
Volunteers may assist staff with reading prizes, story times, and web development for kids' programs in behind-the-scenes work. All new volunteer applicants need to sign up for a brief interview. There is also a two-hour orientation for new and returning volunteers. Pick up a junior volunteer application at the Kids' World desk. Completed applications are due by 10 p.m. May 12. Traveling Bank: The Traveling Bank, a philanthropy project for non-for-profit groups sponsored by the Peoples' Bank of Arlington Heights, visits the library during April. Displayed at the checkout desk, the Traveling Bank is available to accept donations from library visitors, and all money collected this month will be donated to the Friends of the Library to fund programs and services for the library. Created during World War II to assist local serviceman stationed around the world, the Traveling Bank and its history is being exhibited during April in a display case near the library's Dunton Avenue entrance.
New on the Bookmobile: Visit the library's bookmobile and browse the latest magazine selections. Check out best-sellers like Nickelodeon, Conde Nast's Traveler, and Architectural Digest.
