Glen Ellyn wants you to recycle your junk
Got junk?
Glen Ellyn's Recycle Extravaganza's the place to be.
In conjunction with Earth Day, the village and its Environmental Commission are sponsoring the annual event.
From 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, area residents can drive through the commuter parking lot at Duane and Lorraine streets and drop off unwanted items. Volunteers will be directing vehicles to different stations based on what they bring.
Items being collected include eyeglasses, books, laser and ink cartridges, American flags, hearing aides, fire extinguishers, plastic pop bottles and milk jugs, bottle caps, loose and broken jewelry, record albums, cell phones, bikes, tools, mowers, neckties, buttons, toys, small appliances, clothing, coats and gym shoes.
Kristen Denney, staff liaison for the Environmental Commission, said about 250 cars drove through last year.
"We're hoping to have at least that much, but probably a little bit of an increase," she said.
There also will be a book exchange at the same location, where people can drop off and take home books as they please.
"We're just hoping for it to be a success," Denney said. "So people dispose of their items in an environmentally-friendly manner."
