Learn green lessons from historic buildings

At 7 p.m. May 8, Mike Jackson will present "Sustaining Design: Lessons From the Past" at the Geneva Public Library, 127 James St.

He will focus on the burgeoning green design marketplace and new products; building recycling; embodied energy in existing buildings; and the social values between concerns about the environment and the teardown trend.

His presentation follows the preservation theory that "The greenest building is the one already built."

Jackson is chief architect of the Preservation Services Division of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. He holds degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Columbia University. He is a visiting professor of architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

This event is sponsored by the Geneva Historic Preservation Commission, Aurora Historic Preservation Commission, Kane County Historic Preservation, Elgin Historic Preservation Commission and Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley.

The presentation is free and no registration is required.
