Grandma's bad luck worth a million bucks

A Willowbrook grandmother wasn't going to let the fact that a gas station was out of her favorite scratch-off lottery ticket stand in her way of becoming a millionaire.

"The ticket I originally wanted wasn't in stock so I bought two $250 Million Millionaires Club tickets," said 76-year-old Virginia Braucher. "The first one wasn't a winner, but when I saw that I won on the second one, I just kept staring at the ticket because I couldn't believe I won."

The retired grandmother became the 11th person to win $1 million with that particular lottery ticket, which sells for $10. Lottery officials said there are 30 $1 million top prizes available through those tickets.

Braucher said she plans to remodel her kitchen and buy a more comfortable vehicle for her disabled husband with her winnings.

The Darien gas station where the ticket was sold will receive $10,000 as well, lottery officials said.
