Buffalo Grove doctor fired after arrest on assault charges

A doctor who was arrested this month on charges of sexual assault and child pornography was fired from his job in Buffalo Grove.

Robert Hughes was terminated from the Advocate Medical Group effective March 10, according to a letter sent out to his patients this week.

Hughes was arrested on March 3 by Wilmette police at his home on two counts of sexual assault, two counts of manufacturing child pornography, felony possession of cannabis and endangering the life of a child.

Police said Hughes, 48, a family physician at the Advocate Medical Group office, at 214 McHenry Road, helped a 17-year-old girl acquire illegal and prescription drugs in exchange for sex acts.

Police have said that Hughes did not meet the victim through his practice.

Wilmette Deputy Police Chief Brian King said last week that more charges might be filed against Hughes, likely by a grand jury, but he would not comment on what those charges could be.

Nate Llewellyn, spokesman for the medical group, confirmed the action taken last week but said he couldn't comment on why Hughes was fired.

He said the Wilmette police, who are conducting the investigation, have not been to the medical building to investigate Hughes.

He said police have also not notified the medical group that any patients are victims of wrongdoing by Hughes.

Patients who received the letter from Advocate were encouraged to reschedule with other physicians in the medical group, Llewellyn said.

Hughes will be back in the Skokie courthouse 1:30 p.m. on March 28. He was released from jail last week after posting $50,000 as security on his $500,000 bond, police said.
