Funeral set for Lindenhurst teen
Family members of James J. Menheer said Sunday they couldn't imagine anyone with more friends.
But it was Emmy, Menheer's 1-year-old niece, whom he cherished the most.
"Anywhere James went, everyone smiled," said Mackenzie Koba, Menheer's cousin. "He was like my brother. And he was the most amazing person I've ever met."
Menheer, 19, of Lindenhurst, died Saturday when his car slid into a tree at the intersection of Route 132 and Prospect Drive.
Lindenhurst Police officials say the crash happened about 2:50 a.m., and speed was likely a factor.
Lake County Coroner Richard Keller said Menheer died from multiple trauma. Toxicology tests to determine if he had been drinking will be performed today.
Menheer was a 2007 graduate of Lakes Community High School in Lake Villa. He worked as a packer and shipper for the Outlook Windows Fashions of Waukegan.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Amy and Bill Sutton of Lindenhurst; his father and stepmother, Erik and Mary Menheer of Lake Villa; two brothers; and one sister.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Strang Funeral Home, 1055 Main St., Antioch.
