Aurora man gets 55 years for killing
A 28-year-old Aurora man was sentenced to 55 years in prison Thursday for gunning down a man in a gang-related slaying, authorities said.
Shermain L. Shamley was convicted last January in the Aug. 10, 2002, murder of 24-year-old Rashard Wright of Aurora, who was shot twice in the head.
Shamley must serve all of his sentence, which includes an added 25 years because a gun was used, before he is eligible for parole, according to Kane County prosecutors.
Shamley on Thursday also pleaded guilty to aggravated battery, an unrelated offense stemming from a 2003 brawl in the Kane County jail that injured a deputy.
He received credit for 1,460 days spent in the jail since his arrest at a friend's house a week after Wright was shot. Shamley had been jailed on $5 million bond.
Police say Shamley walked up to Wright and shot him twice in the head with a .32-caliber handgun and fled in a getaway car parked down the block.
Wright died at Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora.
