Refresher course in economics needed

It seems that there is a trade-off in the new world economy that Economics 101 has somehow simply missed.

As we keep off-shoring American jobs, we will simply be exporting prosperity to poor areas of the world and importing their poverty.

Added to this mix, is that we are adding to our consumption of petroleum as we move those goods, that were once made locally, across thousands of miles and back to our shores.
