Wheeling murder trial opens
Jury selection started Tuesday in the murder trial of a man accused of stabbing a 22-year-old Wheeling man during an argument in 2002.
The slaying of Juan Carlos Cardoso went without an arrest until 2007, when authorities extradited Alfredo Hernandez, 32, from Mexico.
Hernandez, who previously lived on the 200 block of Ninth Street in Wheeling, is facing two counts of first-degree murder. Cardoso, of the 100 block of Arbor Court, was outside Hernandez's three-flat when an altercation broke out April 14, 2002.
He was wounded in the chest with a kitchen knife and died six days later at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
The trial will continue today with opening statements before Cook County Judge John Scotillo in the Rolling Meadows courthouse.
