North Carolina clinches ACC
Danny Green had 18 points, and top-ranked North Carolina scored the final 10 points of its 76-68 victory over No. 6 Duke on Saturday night at Durham, N.C., to give the Tar Heels the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title.
Tyler Hansbrough finished with 16 points and 15 rebounds in his third straight victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium, and Wayne Ellington also scored 16 for the Tar Heels (29-2, 14-2).
North Carolina blew an early double-figure lead and briefly trailed before closing strong, holding the Blue Devils scoreless for the final 5½ minutes to claim its eighth straight victory and the top seed in the ACC tournament in Charlotte -- and maybe the inside track for the No. 1 seed in the Charlotte-based East Regional.
Greg Paulus scored 12 of his 15 points in the first half for the Blue Devils (26-4, 13-3), who rallied from a 14-point first-half hole but missed their final 10 shots to fall to 15-1 at Cameron this season.
Jon Scheyer added 14 points, and his stickback with 5:44 remaining gave Duke its only lead of the second half at 68-66 -- but that was the Blue Devils' last field goal of the game.
Ellington drove the left side for a layup to tie it at 68-68 with three minutes left and start North Carolina's game-closing 10-0 run, and on the next possession Hansbrough stuck back Green's miss to put the Tar Heels ahead to stay.
Ty Lawson, who missed the previous meeting with a sprained left ankle, finished with 10 points for the Tar Heels, who won their first winner-take-all regular-season finale against Duke since 1985.
Memphis 94, UAB 56: Joey Dorsey had 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead host No. 2 Memphis (30-1, 16-0 Conference USA) over UAB (22-9, 12-4) for a second straight perfect season in league play.
It was the fourth straight win for the Tigers and their most dominant performance since dropping their only game of the season to Tennessee two weeks ago. By midway through the second half, the Tigers were leading by 36 points and having fun on Senior Day for Dorsey and reserve guard Andre Allen.
Lawrence Kinnard led UAB with 16 points.
UCLA 81, California 80: Josh Shipp hit a rainbow jumper from behind the backboard with 1.5 seconds remaining to help No. 3 UCLA (28-3, 16-2 Pac-10) rally from an 11-point deficit to beat California (15-14, 6-12).
The Bruins' school-record 28th regular-season victory was in jeopardy until the very end. They trailed by 4 points with 31 seconds remaining, then freshman Kevin Love hit a 3-pointer off an inbounds pass from Darren Collison to make it 80-79. Cal's Ryan Anderson was stripped of the ball in the corner. The Bruins eventually got it to Shipp, who was falling out of bounds when he put the ball up one-handed.
Love scored 22 points to lead the Bruins, who go into next week's Pac-10 tournament on a seven-game winning streak. Shipp finished with 12.
Anderson scored 21 points for the Golden Bears, who had won at least once against UCLA in each of the last nine seasons.
Kansas 72, Texas A&M 55: Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur both scored 16 points, and No. 5 Kansas (28-3, 13-3 Big 12) clinched at least a share of its fourth straight regular-season league title by beating host Texas A&M (22-9, 8-8).
It marks the sixth time in school history that Kansas has won four straight conference titles and the first since 1995-98. The Jayhawks have been league champions eight times in the short history of the Big 12, and this extends their NCAA record of conference titles to 51.
Dominique Kirk and Donald Sloan had 15 points each for the Aggies.
USC 77, Stanford 64: Freshman O.J. Mayo scored 25 points, Taj Gibson added 20 points and 11 rebounds, and smaller Southern California (20-10, 11-7 Pac-10) dominated the backboards in a win over visiting No. 7 Stanford (24-6, 13-5).
Dwight Lewis had 14 points, and freshman Davon Jefferson added 11 -- 6 on his second and third 3-pointers of the season -- as the Trojans won for the fifth time in six games.
Kenny Brown scored a season-high 19 points, Robin Lopez added 16, and Brook Lopez had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinal, which lost its second straight.
Xavier 86, Richmond 61: B.J. Raymond scored a career-high 22 points, host No. 8 Xavier (26-5, 14-4 Atlantic 10) made a season-high 36 free throws, and the regular-season league champions headed into the conference tournament with momentum with a win over Richmond (16-13, 9-7).
The Musketeers' 26th win was a regular-season school record and 2 shy of the school record for wins overall.
