Shooting spree that began at Miss. bank leaves 4 dead

McCOMB, Miss. -- A man fatally shot two people today in the bank where his ex-wife worked, then fled with the woman and killed her before committing suicide, authorities said.

The others killed were a customer and an employee of the Regions Bank branch in McComb, in southwestern Mississippi.

"It wasn't a bank robbery. It was a domestic situation," McComb Police Chief Billie Hughes said.

Robert Lanham walked inside the bank shortly after 11 a.m., opened fire, took his ex-wife hostage and fled in a truck, authorities said.

While police were at the bank, Hughes said, officers received a call that the woman's body had been found along Highway 51 about 4 miles south of McComb.

Initial reports said Rachel J. Lanham was likely shot and dumped out of the vehicle. But Pike County Coroner Percy Pittman said he believes she may have been trying to get out of the car and was ejected when it hit a tree.

Robert Lanham died of a gunshot wound to the head after apparently shooting himself while driving. A handgun was found with his body, Hughes said.

The others killed in the attack were bank employee Ronnie Larrimore and customer James Frederick Fayard, both of McComb.
