College saving seminar

A seminar on saving for college will be held at 7 p.m. March 18 at the Rolling Meadows Senior Center, 3705 Pheasant Drive, Rolling Meadows. As college tuition continues to rise, parents are encouraged to learn about Illinois 529 plans that will ease the burden of paying for college, said state Rep. Suzanne Bassi, a Palatine Republican. Representatives from both Bright Start and College Illinois will discuss both 529 college saving programs along with information about scholarship opportunities and new programs within their plans. College Illinois is a prepaid tuition program.

Grant for Barrington area

Congresswoman Melissa Bean will present a $493,500 grant to Barrington area emergency responders at 10:15 a.m. today, at the Barrington Police and Fire station, 400 N. Northwest Hwy. The federal grant helps pay for communications equipment -- portable radios, mobile radios and consolettes -- for the Barrington-Inverness Police Department, the Barrington Hills Police Department and the Barrington-Countryside Fire Department, replacing their incompatible equipment. Officials say the new interoperable communications equipment will allow seamless communication among area police and firefighters, and will allow the agencies to participate in the Illinois statewide first responder communications network Starcom21.
